If you’re arriving in Spit, Croatia, from overseas, then you’ll almost certainly arrive at Resnik Airport. This is served by numerous airlines, including low-cost ones. Technically, you can also reach Split, Croatia by ferry, bus, or train but there are very few direct international connections. Generally, you’ll need to go to Zagreb first. Split became famous as a retirement home (for the Roman Emperor Diocletian). It’s still packed full of history and that’s what some people want. Many people, however, come to Split for its amazing scenery and fun local life. Split is right on the coast so it’s a great place for watersports and beach life. When the sun goes down, head back to the city for the nightlife. No trip to Split is complete without a visit to Diocletian’s palace. This is basically a miniature city with breathtaking architecture and art. It also has some great places to eat, drink and shop. While you’re there, you can take a detour to the Riva. This seaside promenade is an amazing place just to watch the world go by. When you’re rested, head up Marjan hill. Explore the forest with its old Jewish cemetery and take in the spectacular views over the city. If you’re into nature, then you’ll definitely want to see Krka Waterfalls, National Park. While the waterfalls are the headline attraction, the park is also full of lakes and caverns. If you visit in summer, you can even go swimming. You really don’t need your own transport to enjoy Split itself. It is, however, strongly recommended to hire a motorbike, scooter, or quad bike if you want to explore the surrounding area. This gives you total freedom to set your own routes and schedule. In particular, it means you can be at popular destinations when they are just opening before other visitors get there.
