Hiring a motorbike in Syracuse
Arriving at either Catania Airport or into Port Augusta by sea puts you at the edge of Sicily's east coast. With so many fantastic sights and charming coastal cities to explore along the shoreline, having your own set of wheels is a must. Consider getting a motorcycle hire, scooter hire or quad hire to make the most of your time. A great starting point is Augusta itself. Wander the narrow lanes and admire the pastel-coloured traditional houses. Stop for an espresso in one of the quaint cafés before heading up to visit Augusta's star attraction, the 16th century Spanish fort that juts out into the sea. Take a walk along the ramparts and soak up the views across the harbour. Afterwards, hop on your rented motorbike, scooter or quad and follow the coastal roads north. Pass ancient Greek ruins on your way to Siracusa, a stunning historic city that's positively bursting with ancient archaeological sites like the Greek Theatre and Roman Amphitheatre. Enjoy gelato by the fountain in Piazza Duomo before continuing up the coast. The next stop is picture-perfect Taormina with its winding medieval lanes, Roman amphitheatre and sweeping views of Mount Etna. After lunch on a terrace overlooking the sea, take the mountain roads inland to explore Etna National Park. Return back along the coast, stopping at the little fishing villages of Aci Castello and Aci Trezza, home to dramatic rock formations and seafood restaurants. With so much to see and do along Sicily's east coast, having your own set of wheels makes it easy to explore further afield too. Head south to Noto and Modica to admire the lavish Baroque architecture or west to Palermo to experience Sicily's gritty capital.
